Oakville A’s Capture COBA Major League Playoff Title

The Oakville A’s wrapped up their season yesterday capturing the COBA Major Baseball League Playoff Championship on Sunday afternoon in Milton. It is the first Bruce Evans Award (re-named a couple of years ago in honor of the long-time player, coach, GM and Umpire) since 1991. Team went 5-1 over the coruse fo the weekend to capture the title.

The A’s entered the playoffs as the 6th seed started off their weekend on Friday night and a match-up against the 3rd seeded Erindale Cardinals. Veteran hurler Curtis Braun drew the start and was in total control all weekend as he shut down the Cards by a score of 5-1.

On Saturday, the A’s had a round two date with the Burlington Brants. The Oakville bats stayed hot and once again their pitching was on point again as they defeated the Brants by a score of 9-1 to move to 2-0 on the weekend. That win put them into the undefeated game against the top seeded Etobicoke Rangers. Marc Walton had the start in this one and the vet kept a strong Rangers line-up at bay as they won by a score of 5-3.

Oakville moved into Sunday as the only undefeated team left in the tournament. For the semi-finals they drew the Niagara Metros. They left no doubt in this game as they plated 10 runs in the first two innings and went on to win by a score of 12-1 to move into the league playoff final.

In the final, the A’s took on the Brampton Royals and needed to be beat twice. In the first game, it was a back and forth affair which saw the game tied 6-6 after six innings. In the 7th inning, Oakville couldn’t get anything going but the Royals got a pair of runners on base in their half of the inning. With two outs, both runners attempted to steal and the throw from the catcher squirted away and Brampton plated a run for the 7-6 walk off win.

In game two, Alex Fulton toed the mound and he was brilliant for the A’s. Outside of a home run from big Joe Ferreira, he had the Royals guessing all day at the plate as Oakville took down the championship with a 6-1 victory.
